Zaima Rahman Appointed Legal Officer at Khalil’s Office at the United Nations

Barrister Zaima Rahman, daughter of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, has been appointed as a Legal Officer at the office of Khalilur Rahman, President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

A total of 40 people are serving in various positions at Khalilur Rahman’s office, including six Bangladeshis, one of whom is Zaima Rahman.

Bangladeshi diplomat Abdul Alim will serve as the Deputy Chief of Cabinet. Meanwhile, Moazzem Hossain will serve as an Adviser and Administrative Assistant; Mafizul Islam as Senior Adviser on Information, Artificial Intelligence and Strategic Foresight; Zakir Ahmed as Senior Adviser on Sustainable Development and Climate Change; and Md. Rafiqul Alam Molla as Senior Adviser on Least Developed Countries.

Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman assumed office as President of the 81st UN General Assembly on September 8. Under his presidency, Tarique Rahman will deliver his first speech at the General Assembly on Thursday as Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

According to information provided by UN officials, Zaima Rahman will oversee legal matters at Khalilur Rahman’s office in her capacity as Legal Officer.

Zaima Rahman is the only daughter of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Dr. Zubaida Rahman. She is the granddaughter of former President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

Zaima studied law at Queen Mary University of London and later completed the Bar-at-Law in the United Kingdom. In June 2026, she also passed the first-stage examination for enrolment as an advocate with the Bangladesh Bar Council.

Abdul Alim, who has been appointed Deputy Chief of Cabinet at the Office of the President of the 81st General Assembly, has a long career in diplomacy. He has previously served at Bangladesh’s diplomatic missions in several countries.

UN officials said the President of the General Assembly is not directly a UN staff member and does not receive a regular salary directly from the organisation. Expenses related to the President’s salary and benefits, accommodation or housing, and other costs are generally borne by their home country or government. In some cases, certain expenses are also covered through the UN’s regular budget and trust funds.
