News Desk:
The International Crimes Tribunal will deliver the verdict on Monday, 17 November, in the crimes against humanity case against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and two other accused. There is widespread public concern that leaders and activists of the banned Awami League may resort to acts of sabotage across Dhaka and other parts of the country on that day.
Security forces remain on high alert to prevent any form of terrorist activity by the banned Awami League surrounding the verdict. Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) will deploy additional forces in the capital to prevent violence. Police say they are prepared to handle any situation.
Ahead of the verdict against the ousted prime minister, the Awami League has announced a two-day complete “shutdown” of Dhaka. Today (16 November) is the first day of the program, though it has had no visible impact on the city.
In the past several days, arsonists have set fire to buses in Dhaka and surrounding areas in connection with the upcoming verdict of the International Crimes Tribunal. Crude bombs (cocktails) have also been detonated in several parts of the capital.
Meanwhile, on Saturday afternoon, in response to questions from journalists during his official visit to Patuakhali Circuit House, Home Affairs Adviser Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said the verdict in the case against Sheikh Hasina and others accused of crimes against humanity would definitely be delivered tomorrow (17 November).
The Home Adviser added that the law enforcement agencies have completed all necessary preparations to ensure that no unrest or untoward incident occurs anywhere.
The verdict in the case filed against Sheikh Hasina regarding crimes against humanity during the July uprising is scheduled to be delivered on Monday (17 November) by International Crimes Tribunal-1.
Regarding security measures, Deputy Commissioner of DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, Mohammad Talebur Rahman, stated that police have made extensive preparations. If any group attempts sabotage, police will take legal action to protect the nation and its citizens.
Sources have reported that the Police Headquarters has instructed all police stations to prevent any mobilization of banned Awami League activists from different districts toward the capital. Intelligence surveillance along railway and waterways has also been increased, and police personnel remain vigilant. Police operations continued across various parts of the capital on Sunday.
