IGCC Hosts ‘Shravan Sandhya’ in Dhaka, Celebrating the Shared Monsoon Heritage of India and Bangladesh

Diplomatic Correspondent: The Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC) of the High Commission of India in Dhaka hosted 'Shravan Sandhya' – A Monsoon Musical Evening on Saturday, celebrating the timeless beauty of the monsoon season through an enchanting evening of music and cultural expression.

The event paid tribute to Shravan, the monsoon month that has long inspired poets, musicians and artists across the Indian subcontinent. Revered in both Indian and Bengali literary and musical traditions, the programme highlighted the season's deep cultural significance while reflecting the enduring artistic bonds shared by India and Bangladesh.

The evening featured captivating performances by some of Bangladesh's most celebrated musicians. Eminent Hindustani classical vocalist Guru Anil Kumar Saha and his accomplished disciple Shri Aloke Kumar Sen presented a rich repertoire of Hindustani classical and semi-classical compositions inspired by the monsoon. The audience was further enthralled by renowned Rabindra Sangeet exponent Dr. Chanchal Khan, whose soulful renditions of Rabindranath Tagore's timeless songs added a distinctive cultural dimension to the programme.

Guru Anil Kumar Saha is widely recognised as one of Bangladesh's leading classical vocalists and an esteemed music guru. Through decades of dedicated teaching and performance, he has played a pivotal role in preserving and promoting the Hindustani classical music tradition while mentoring a new generation of accomplished musicians, including Shri Aloke Kumar Sen.

Shri Aloke Kumar Sen is a distinguished Bangladeshi vocalist renowned for his mastery of Hindustani classical and semi-classical music. His versatile performances, spanning ghazals, Rabindra Sangeet and modern Bengali songs, have earned him widespread acclaim both in Bangladesh and internationally.

Dr. Chanchal Khan is one of Bangladesh's foremost Rabindra Sangeet exponents, researchers and educators. Celebrated for his profound interpretations of Tagore's compositions, he has performed at numerous prestigious cultural events at home and abroad, making significant contributions to the preservation and promotion of Rabindra Sangeet.
The artists performed an evocative selection of Bengali and Hindi songs inspired by the monsoon, creating a memorable musical journey that celebrated nature, emotion and the rich cultural traditions shared by the two neighbouring countries.

As part of its continued commitment to cultural diplomacy, the programme underscored the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre's dedication to strengthening cultural exchanges and fostering greater mutual understanding between the peoples of India and Bangladesh through the performing arts.
