India Launches Campaign for UN Security Council 2028–29

Diplomatic Correspondent: New Delhi: India has officially launched its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028–2029 term, presenting a comprehensive vision centered on global peace, inclusive development, and multilateral cooperation under the guiding principle of SHANTI – Securing Holistic Advancement through Norms, Trust and Integrity.

Outlining its priorities, India reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the voice of the Global South, emphasizing that developing nations must play a greater role in shaping international peace, security, and the future of global governance.

India also pledged to advance reformed multilateralism, advocating for a United Nations system that is more democratic, representative, transparent, and effective. The campaign underscores dialogue, cooperation, and consensus-building as the foundation for addressing global challenges.

Highlighting the evolving nature of peacekeeping operations, India called for a future-ready UN peacekeeping framework that is technologically equipped, realistically mandated, and focused on achieving core objectives. It also reaffirmed its strong support for the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, recognizing the critical role of women peacekeepers in conflict prevention and peacebuilding.

On emerging technologies, India proposed a human-centric approach to Artificial Intelligence (AI), emphasizing inclusivity, security, ethical governance, and public benefit. At the same time, it stressed the need to prevent the misuse of AI and address its potential threats to international peace and security.

India further reiterated its commitment to promoting a free, open, and rules-based maritime order in accordance with international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Ensuring the safe and uninterrupted flow of maritime trade, combating piracy, protecting seafarers, and strengthening Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions were identified as key priorities.

The campaign also places significant emphasis on countering terrorism and terror financing through sustained international cooperation. India called for a transparent, objective, and evidence-based sanctions regime for the designation of terrorist organizations.

Concluding its campaign message, India stated that a reformed, representative, and results-oriented United Nations Security Council must include a stronger voice for the Global South, asserting that meaningful global governance requires broader representation and inclusive decision-making.
