Bastille Day Marks a New Chapter in France–Bangladesh Strategic Partnership

Diplomatic Correspondent: France celebrated its National Day (Bastille Day) on Monday, reaffirming its enduring friendship with Bangladesh and highlighting the growing momentum in bilateral cooperation across trade, defence, education, culture, climate action and regional diplomacy.

Bastille Day commemorates the ideals of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity, symbolizing the French Revolution and the nation's commitment to democracy, human rights and national unity. Around the world, French diplomatic missions observe the occasion as an opportunity to strengthen international partnerships.

This year's celebration in Dhaka comes at a significant moment, with French Ambassador Jean-Marc Séré-Charlet, who assumed office in November 2025, leading efforts to deepen engagement with Bangladesh. Since his arrival, the Ambassador has held high-level meetings with senior government leaders, promoted stronger economic and strategic cooperation, expanded cultural and educational exchanges, and reaffirmed France's support for Bangladesh's development priorities.

France remains one of Bangladesh's key European partners, with bilateral trade reaching approximately US$4.5 billion in recent years, driven largely by Bangladesh's ready-made garment exports. Both countries are also exploring greater collaboration in investment, climate resilience, innovation, civil aviation, education and defence cooperation.

Educational and cultural diplomacy continues to play a vital role in the relationship. Through the Alliance Française network and the Embassy's Ambassador's Prize, France is encouraging Bangladeshi students to pursue French language studies and academic exchange opportunities, with the winners of this year's competition announced on Bastille Day.

As Bangladesh moves beyond its LDC status and strengthens its engagement with European partners, France has reiterated its commitment to supporting the country's economic transition, climate ambitions and multilateral cooperation.

The growing partnership between France and Bangladesh reflects a shared vision for sustainable development, regional stability and stronger people-to-people ties, making Bastille Day 2026 not only a celebration of France's national heritage but also a symbol of an expanding and forward-looking bilateral relationship.
