Sarnath's Ancient Buddhist Site Inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List

Staff Correspondent: India's Ancient Buddhist Site at Sarnath, Varanasi has been officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List during the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee, held in Busan, Republic of Korea, from 19–29 July 2026.

Announcing the achievement, the Permanent Delegation of India to UNESCO described the inscription as a landmark recognition of India's rich civilizational heritage and the universal values embodied in the teachings of Lord Buddha.

India's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to UNESCO, Shri Vishal V. Sharma, thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister of Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), and the UNESCO World Heritage Centre for their support in securing the inscription.

He noted that Sarnath remains one of the most sacred sites for more than 500 million Buddhists worldwide, where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining Enlightenment, setting in motion the Wheel of Dharma and establishing the Buddhist Sangha. The site is also home to the Lion Capital of Ashoka, India's National Emblem, further enhancing its historical and cultural significance.

The inscription recognizes India's enduring civilizational legacy and the timeless message of peace, compassion, harmony and non-violence reflected in the teachings of the Buddha, which continue to inspire people across the world.
With the addition of Sarnath, India now has 45 UNESCO World Heritage properties, comprising 37 Cultural, 7 Natural, and 1 Mixed site, underscoring the country's commitment to preserving places of Outstanding Universal Value.

The Permanent Delegation of India to UNESCO also expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Culture, the Archaeological Survey of India, the Government of Uttar Pradesh, UNESCO's advisory bodies, and all experts and stakeholders involved in the successful preparation of the nomination dossier and inscription process.
