News Desk: Andy Burnham has been elected as the new leader of the UK's Labour Party, paving the way for him to become the country's next Prime Minister.
Following his election, Burnham said he was fully prepared to defeat Britain's new right-wing forces and return power to ordinary people.
According to The Guardian, Burnham was formally announced as Labour leader on Friday (July 17) at a special party conference held at the TUC headquarters in London.
The announcement was made by the head of the party's National Executive Committee and leading contender for the role of Chancellor, Shabana Mahmood. Burnham, who is set to succeed outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer, received unanimous backing from Labour MPs, trade unions, and party branches.
In an emotional acceptance speech, Burnham said the country was yearning for a new kind of politics. However, he warned that this represented Labour's last opportunity to deliver meaningful change and urged the party to remain united.
Praising outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Burnham credited his leadership with securing one of Labour's greatest electoral victories while calling on party members to put internal divisions aside and work together.
Outlining his political vision, Burnham said he wanted to decentralize power by transferring greater authority from London and Westminster to local communities.
He also pledged to pursue a business-friendly agenda while prioritizing social housing and support for the homeless. In addition, he vowed to work for the entire United Kingdom, including Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
The final transition is expected to take place on Monday (July 20), when Keir Starmer will formally submit his resignation to King Charles. Burnham is then expected to be officially appointed Prime Minister at Buckingham Palace later that afternoon.
After taking office, he is expected to deliver an address outside Downing Street and announce his new Cabinet.
