News Desk: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will leave for Malaysia tomorrow on an official visit at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
A flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines carrying the Prime Minister is scheduled to depart Dhaka for Kuala Lumpur in the afternoon. After completing his Malaysia visit, he will travel directly to China at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
Ahead of the Prime Minister’s visits to Malaysia and China, Foreign Minister Asad Alam Siam held a press briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today.
He said that during Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s upcoming visit to China, Bangladesh and China are expected to sign 15 to 17 bilateral agreements, including 13 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), two agreements, one action plan, and one protocol. Discussions on the long-awaited Teesta Project will also take place during the visit.
Siam said, “This will be the Prime Minister’s first foreign visit since the government came to power in February this year.”
He mentioned that the delegation accompanying the Prime Minister to Malaysia and China has been kept relatively small, consisting of 27 to 28 members.
“We have tried to keep it at a reasonable level,” he told journalists. He said the visits are being viewed as a major diplomatic initiative aimed at strengthening Bangladesh’s economic partnerships, attracting foreign investment, and enhancing regional connectivity.
On June 25, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will hold a bilateral meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
As part of his official visit, he will also meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on June 26. During his China visit, the Prime Minister will participate in the 17th Annual Meeting of the New Champions (Summer Davos Forum), scheduled to be held from June 23 to 25 in Dalian, Liaoning Province.
The forum, themed “Innovating at Scale,” will bring together more than 1,700 representatives from over 90 countries and regions. Discussions at the forum will focus on global economic trends, technological advancements, and innovation-driven growth.
During the Malaysia leg of the visit, priority will be given to expanding trade, cooperation in the labour market, and increasing investment opportunities. Meanwhile, during the China visit, Bangladesh’s commitment to deepening cooperation in infrastructure, technology, connectivity, and development sectors will be highlighted.
The Prime Minister is expected to return home next Friday night.
Additional Foreign Secretary (Diplomacy and Other Priority Issues) A.K.M. Shahidul Karim and senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were present at the briefing.
