News Desk: The High Court has directed that former Narayanganj City Corporation mayor Selina Hayat Ivy should not be arrested or harassed in any new cases.
The order was issued on Sunday (April 26) by a bench comprising Justice Razik-Al-Jalil and Justice Debasish Roy Chowdhury of the High Court.
Ivy had previously been granted bail by the court. However, after securing bail, she was shown arrested in two new cases. The court has questioned why repeatedly implicating her in new cases should not be considered illegal.
Senior lawyers Barrister Sara Hossain and Motaher Hossain Saju represented Ivy in court. They stated that Ivy was already on bail granted by the High Court, yet she was shown arrested (“shown arrest”) in two new cases. The writ petition was filed challenging the legality of this shown arrest.
It is worth noting that Ivy was named as an accused in a murder case related to the killing of garment worker Minarul Islam during the anti-discrimination student movement in Narayanganj in July 2024. In that case filed against 132 people, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Ivy was listed as the 12th accused. Since then, several more cases have been filed against her.
Following the court’s order, it is being viewed that the immediate fear of repeated new cases against her has temporarily eased.
