News desk: The police arrested 23 activists of the banned Awami League, Jubo League and allied organizations during raids in Dhanmondi and surrounding areas of the capital.
They were arrested on Friday (May 22) while preparing for the march and trying to organize a jhtica program. Among the detained people are important leaders and activists of different districts and upazilas of the country, the police said.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADC) Jisanul Haque of Dhanmondi Zone of Ramna Division confirmed the matter.
He said that 23 people were arrested in Dhanmondi number 32 and surrounding areas. The police had information that among the arrested persons are leaders and activists of various districts including the Upazila Jubo League president, who were preparing to lead the jhatika march.
He also said that patrolling and security measures have been strengthened in the area to prevent any activities of banned organizations. He also said that the members of the law and order forces are on alert to monitor the situation.
Meanwhile, Dhanmondi police station OC Muhammad Saiful Islam said that the banned Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League leaders and activists were planning a large-scale rally. Police have information that as part of their program, they also planned to take oath to bring back the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Police said, the identity and affiliation of the detained persons is being verified. Legal action against them is pending.
