NCP tries to strengthen influence in parliament, Jamaat remains weak: Rumin Farhana

News Desk: Rumin Farhana, an independent Member of Parliament from Brahmanbaria-2 constituency, has said that the NCP is more vocal than Jamaat in Parliament, adding that Jamaat-e-Islami appears somewhat weaker in comparison.

She made these remarks in an interview given to Deutsche Welle.

In response to a question about her assessment of the current opposition alliance between the NCP and Jamaat in Parliament, Rumin Farhana said, “I am not in a position to judge their performance. However, from what I have understood from the NCP’s statements, this is not an ideological alliance; it is an electoral and strategic alliance, as the NCP itself has said.”

She further said, “From what I have observed as just one of the 10 ordinary viewers in Parliament, it seemed to me that the NCP has been much more vocal and has tried more to create a strong opposition presence in Parliament. In that case, Jamaat seemed somewhat weaker to me, and this is not only my observation; I have received similar feedback after speaking with many others as well.”

Referring to weaknesses in the opposition’s role, Rumin Farhana said, “There was a two-day long discussion on the July Charter, mainly on a motion of adjournment. In that discussion, the ruling party clarified legal points in a way that we did not see equally strong legal counterarguments from the opposition. There are practicing lawyers in the opposition as well, just as there are in the ruling party.”

Rumin Farhana added, “The general expectation was that the opposition would present much stronger legal arguments. However, we observed some shortcomings in that regard. There were many emotional speeches, which is not wrong in itself—politics is not separate from emotion. But since legal issues were repeatedly highlighted, I felt that much stronger legal arguments could have been presented.”
