BNP ran out of oil while issuing cards: Nahid Islam

News Desk: Nahid Islam, Convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and Opposition Whip in Parliament, has said that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party is trying to win over the public through “farmer cards” and “family cards.”

He stated that in the process of introducing these cards, the BNP has “run out of fuel and energy,” while ministers are still claiming in parliament that there is no fuel crisis. According to him, the government is denying real problems, including economic challenges and the gradual deterioration of law and order in the country.

He further said that they were ready to fully cooperate with the government in the interest of the country and its people, but the BNP government has closed all avenues of cooperation. He added that he is unaware of any government in Bangladesh’s history that has become so unpopular in such a short time—just two months—and questioned what the situation might be in the next six months.

Nahid Islam made these remarks on Saturday at a rally organized by Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh at Suhrawardy Udyan.

He emphasized that they do not want instability in the country. Their only demand is the implementation of the referendum’s verdict to properly honor the July mass uprising. To achieve this, he said, they will remain active both in parliament and on the streets.

He added that through the July 2024 mass uprising, the people of Bangladesh envisioned change and pledged not to allow any new authoritarian rule in the country. From that commitment, reform initiatives began. However, he alleged that the BNP obstructed reform efforts at every step and even after joining the consensus commission, continued to dissent on key reforms.

Finally, he warned that if the BNP continues to follow the same path as the Awami League by politicizing state institutions, the people—especially the youth and those involved in the July uprising—will once again take to the streets to resist.
