Reuters reports that a landslide occurred in the Ecuadorian capital, Quito, on Monday night after heavy rains. At that time mud and stones covered the houses and roads and the electricity service was disrupted. Many were trapped in their homes and casualties were reported.

On Tuesday, a day after the landslide, many houses and roads in the city were covered in mud and search operations were underway to rescue those trapped, Reuters reported.

"So far, 22 bodies have been taken to the hospital morgue," Mayor Santiago Guerderas told reporters on Tuesday. Another 48 people were injured. The condition of two of them is critical. It is also rumored that 20 more people are missing.

Nine people were reported missing and 32 were injured immediately after the landslide on Monday night. But as time goes on, the number of casualties and missing continues to rise. A search for missing people is under way, said Alba Kotakachi, a Quito resident.

However, more landslides are expected in Quito. The local authorities did not rule out that possibility. However, the local administration has kept the affected families in safe shelter for the time being. Besides, the road full of mud is also being cleaned.

According to Reuters, heavy rains are currently falling in various parts of Ecuador. This has led to floods in those areas and damaged hundreds of houses and roads.
