International Desk: Eight people were killed in a gun attack in the small mountain town of Huitzilla, south of Mexico City in Morelos province, Mexico.

Local time of the country on Saturday (May 11) late at night, these people were killed by gunmen, the police said. Four of the victims died on the spot and four died at the hospital. News from ABC News.

Authorities said eight people were killed by gunmen in Morelos province over the weekend, media reported on Monday (May 13). The attack took place last Saturday in the municipality of Hoitzilla, located near the highway connecting the capital with the tourist town of Cuernavaca. Authorities in Morelos said four people died at the scene after the attack and another four after being taken to hospital.

Morelos is a very popular tourist area for Mexico City residents to spend their vacations. However, it borders the restive Guerrero province, where various drug lords operate their operations.

In November last year, nine people were killed in armed clashes between police and drug-trafficking gangs in Cuernavaca. About 450,000 people have lost their lives across the country since 2006, when the North American country's government deployed the Mexican military to launch an anti-drug campaign, according to official figures.
