At least 11 worshipers were killed and many others injured when a man attacked a mosque in Nigeria's northern Kano state, the BBC reported, citing police sources in the country. They said a man doused the mosque in petrol before setting it on fire, locking the doors and trapping around 40 worshipers inside.
The police believe that the attack was triggered by a family dispute over inheritance and division of property. A 38-year-old suspect has been arrested by the police in this incident. Locals said that after the attack, flames spread in the mosque.
Meanwhile, the cries of the devotees were heard and they tried to open the locked door from inside. A police statement said rescue teams including bomb experts were immediately deployed in Kano city in response to the attack. In addition, the police also confirmed that no bomb was used in the attack on the mosque.
After visiting the scene, local police chief Omar Sanda told reporters that what happened was not a terrorist act, but rather a dispute over property inheritance. The suspect is currently with us and is providing the necessary information.
