International Desk: At least 50 people have been killed in heavy rains and floods in central Afghanistan. The country has said that hundreds of houses have been damaged. On Saturday (May 18), Qatar-based media Al Jazeera reported this information. It said that flash floods caused by heavy monsoon rains for several weeks have damaged large areas of the country, residents and homes. On Saturday (May 18), police spokesman Abdul Rahman Badri confirmed the death of at least 50 people in Ghor province.
He expressed fear that the number of casualties would increase. This police spokesman said, "Thousands of cattle have died in this terrible flood... Hundreds of hectares of agricultural land, bridges and culverts and thousands of trees have been destroyed.
Abdul Wahid Hamas, a spokesman for Ghor's provincial governor, said preliminary reports indicated dozens of people were missing. Maulavi Abdul Hai Zaim, head of the information department of the province, said that many important roads in the area have been damaged in the disaster that started last Friday. Abdul Hai Zaim said 2,000 houses were completely destroyed, 4,000 were partially damaged and more than 2,000 shops were under water in the provincial capital Feroze Koh.
