BNP leader held with 74 yaba tablets in Ulipur

Kurigram Correspondent: District Detective Branch (DB) police have arrested a BNP leader with 74 yaba tablets in Ulipur, Kurigram. He was detained from the Puratan Anantapur area of Hatia Union in the upazila on Sunday (September 27) afternoon.

The arrested, Afzal Hossain, 42, is the joint convener of Hatia Union BNP and son of Syed Ali of Puratan Anantapur.

According to DB police sources, acting on a tip-off, a team led by DB SI Pushpa Ranjan Debnath conducted a drive in the Puratan Anantapur area of Hatia Union on Sunday afternoon. Afzal Hossain was arrested from his residence during the operation. Police later recovered 74 yaba tablets from his possession.

Hatia Union BNP convener Faruk Ahmed Baten said, “Afzal Hossain holds the post of joint convener of the union BNP. There is no place for drug dealers in BNP. The upazila BNP leaders have been informed so that organisational action can be taken against him.”

Confirming the incident, DB OC Rezaul Karim said a case had been filed against Afzal Hossain with Ulipur Police Station under the Narcotics Control Act.

Ulipur Police Station OC Shawkat Ali Sarker said the accused would be produced before a court on Monday.
