Indian Army chief General Dhiraj Sheth conferred honorary rank of Nepal Army general

Indian Army Chief General Dhiraj Sheth has been conferred the honorary rank of General of the Nepal Army.

Nepal President Ram Chandra Paudel conferred the honorary rank on General Sheth at a ceremony held at Shital Niwas in the capital Kathmandu on Monday (August 17).

The honour was bestowed in continuation of a tradition that began in 1950, under which Nepal and India confer honorary general ranks on each other’s army chiefs.

During his four-day visit to Nepal, General Sheth also held talks with Nepal Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel. The two discussed matters of mutual interest and ways to further strengthen military ties between the two countries.

According to a press release issued by the Office of the President of Nepal, Vice President Ram Sahaya Prasad Yadav, Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal, Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava, and senior officials from the Nepal Army and government attended the ceremony. General Sheth arrived in Nepal on Sunday.

The Indian Embassy said the army chief’s visit reaffirmed the unique and longstanding defence ties between India and Nepal. The relationship is based on shared values, mutual trust and longstanding army-to-army ties.

General Sheth also met Indian Ambassador Naveen Srivastava at the Indian Embassy, where they discussed ways to further strengthen the overall relationship between New Delhi and Kathmandu, the embassy said.

On Monday, General Sheth also handed over military and medical equipment to the Nepal Army.

According to a Nepal Army press release, he planted a sapling at the Army Headquarters premises and received and inspected a guard of honour.

The Nepal Army said General Sheth’s visit is expected to further strengthen mutual trust and cooperation between the armies of Nepal and India.
