Diplomatic Correspondent: The High Commission of Maldives to Bangladesh hosted “The Great Tuna Gala – Flavours from the Sunny Side” at the Grand Ballroom of Sheraton Dhaka, bringing together diplomats, government officials, business leaders and guests to celebrate Maldivian tuna, culinary heritage and island culture.
Her Excellency Shiuneen Rasheed, High Commissioner of Maldives to Bangladesh, welcomed guests at the evening event and highlighted the importance of tuna fisheries as a symbol of Maldivian identity, livelihood and sustainable development.
In her remarks, the High Commissioner emphasized that fishing is more than an economic activity for the Maldives; it is deeply connected to the country’s history, communities and way of life. She highlighted the traditional pole-and-line fishing method, which allows selective fishing, reduces unwanted catch and supports the long-term sustainability of marine resources.
She said Maldivian tuna represents a larger story of fishermen, island communities, ocean conservation and generations of traditional knowledge. She invited Bangladeshi businesses, importers, distributors and the hospitality sector to explore greater cooperation with Maldivian fisheries companies and expand trade opportunities in tuna and other seafood products.
The High Commissioner also highlighted the strong people-to-people connection between Bangladesh and Maldives through tourism, business and cultural exchanges. She expressed hope that Maldivian fisheries products would become more widely available in Bangladesh and contribute to stronger commercial partnerships between the two countries.
The evening featured authentic Maldivian cuisine prepared by Chef Maha Naseer, who travelled from the Maldives especially for the event. Guests experienced traditional tuna-based dishes through live culinary stations showcasing the flavours of the islands.
Speaking as the Chief Guest, M. Rashiduzzaman Millat, Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism of Bangladesh, appreciated the initiative of the Maldives High Commission and praised the country’s tourism and fisheries sectors.
The Minister highlighted Bangladesh’s own tourism potential, mentioning attractions including the Sundarbans, Cox’s Bazar—the world’s longest natural sea beach, the hills and lakes of Chattogram, tea gardens of Sylhet and the hospitality of Bangladeshi people.
He said Bangladesh aims to transform its tourism opportunities into a sustainable and internationally competitive industry. He also announced that Cox’s Bazar International Airport is expected to begin international operations soon, creating new opportunities for global travelers to visit the destination.
The Minister noted that Maldives is an important example for Bangladesh in tourism development and expressed confidence that closer cooperation between the two countries in fisheries, food and tourism would create mutual benefits.
He further mentioned ongoing efforts to strengthen tourism cooperation between Bangladesh and Maldives through a possible Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and called for improved visa facilities to encourage more Bangladeshi travelers to visit Maldives.
The event concluded with appreciation for sponsors and partners, including Epiticia Holding Private Limited, Burrow by Atmosphere, Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company, Maldivian Airlines, whose support contributed to the success of the gala.
The Great Tuna Gala served as a platform to celebrate the shared connection of Bangladesh and Maldives with the sea while opening new avenues for cooperation in fisheries, tourism, trade and cultural exchange.
