International Desk: There was an attack on the police headquarters in Karachi, the capital of Pakistan's Sindh province. 9 people were killed. At least five terrorists were among the dead. In addition, four more people including police and Rangers members lost their lives. The attack and loss of life occurred on Friday (February 17) night, Pakistani media The News International reported in a report.

According to the report, on Friday night, militants attacked the police headquarters located in Karachi's Shara Faisal. Meanwhile, at least five terrorists were killed in the gunfight inside the Karachi police chief's office and four others, including a policeman, lost their lives. Originally, an unknown number of terrorists started firing at the police headquarters located next to the Karachi Sadar police station on Friday night. Besides, several buildings located here are used as residences of police officers and their family members. The News International says that four people, including Rangers and policemen, lost their lives in the attack. Officials confirmed to Geo News that 18 more people were injured. Officials say at least three militants blew themselves up during the attack and two others were shot dead in the gunfight.

A police official, who did not want to be named, told Geo News that the attackers entered the office wearing police uniforms. The banned group Tehreek-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack, BBC reported. BBC correspondents say the attack was followed by heavy gunfire between the two sides, and possibly multiple grenade explosions.

During the clash, personnel inside the police headquarters switched off the lights and blocked the entrance. The BBC's Urdu division reported that Karachi's police headquarters are located on Sharay Faisal Road in the city. Pakistan's Defense Minister Khawaja Asif told Geo News' Shahzeb Khanzada that it was not enough to condemn the attack and strict action must be taken against the militants.
