53 killed in IS attack in Syria

International Desk: There has been a terrible attack in Syria, a war-torn country in the Middle East. At least 53 civilians were killed. Besides, several others were injured in this incident. The attack and casualties occurred in the central desert province of Homs, Syria. The Syrian state media reported this information on Friday (February 17). At the same time, state media blamed the jihadist militant group Islamic State for the attack. Reuters reported this information in a report on Saturday (February 18).

According to reports, the bodies of the civilians killed in the attack have been taken to the Palmyra Provincial Hospital. All of the victims taken to Palmyra Provincial Hospital had gunshot wounds to the head, Syrian state news agency SANA reported, citing the head of the hospital. Syrian state media said the victims were attacked while gathering truffles in the desert. The attack was carried out. However, Homs province is known to be an area controlled by the Syrian government and its allies.

Reuters reports that five people injured in the attack have been transferred to other hospitals. In addition, one of the survivors of the attack told SANA, IS burned their car. Of course, no one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, while the news agency AFP reported that truffles in the desert. State television reported that 53 people were killed in an attack by ISIS terrorists southwest of the city of al-Sokhna in Homs province during the gathering. Walid Audi, director of Palmyra Hospital, said 46 civilians and seven soldiers were among the dead. Audi told Syrian pro-government radio station Sham FM, The bodies of those killed in the attack, which targeted dozens of people, were 'brought to the hospital.'

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported the attack on Friday. According to Al Arabiya news agency, the organization said - "ISIS killed 36 people during a truffle gathering in Sokhna, Palmyra region on Friday." However, others managed to escape the attack, the Observatory said.

AFP says scores of people, including women and children, have been targeted in recent years while gathering truffles in central, northeastern and eastern Syria. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 16 people were killed in a similar attack targeting poachers in the same area last Saturday. Most of the dead were civilians. Dozens of people were also abducted in the attack, the Observatory said, adding that 25 of them have been released but the exact fate of the others is still unknown.
