International Desk: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Moscow has begun to take "big revenge" for the resistance that Ukraine has built against Russian aggression. He made these comments as Russian forces continue to advance in eastern Ukraine. Zelensky has been warning for weeks that Moscow is preparing a major offensive in southern and eastern Ukraine.
Although no major attacks were reported on Monday, Denis Pushilin, the administrator of Russia-controlled eastern Ukraine's Donetsk region, said Russian forces had taken control of the Valedar area, Reuters reported. It is a coal mining town. However, since the start of the war, Ukraine has been using it as a base.
Russian mercenaries have taken partial control of a supply line to Wagner's Bakhmut, said Ian Gagin, an adviser to Pushilin. Russia has been trying to take control of the important city of Bakhmut for the past few months.
A day earlier, the head of the Wagner group claimed that their fighters had taken control of the village of Blahodatan. The village lies just north of Bakhmut. However, it is claimed by Ukraine that they have repelled Russian attacks in Blahodaton and Valedar. Reuters says it has not been able to independently verify the claims of both sides. However, the situation indicates that the Russian forces are advancing, albeit slowly.
