International Desk: An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 has struck the southeastern Kerman province of Iran. The earthquake hit the country around 8 am local time on Thursday. However, no damage or casualty was immediately reported in this earthquake. The USGS said the earthquake that hit Iran had a magnitude of 4.5. Iran's National Meteorological Center (NCM) said the earthquake hit the southern part of the country at around 8:23 am local time.
This earthquake originated 10 km underground from the surface. According to the country's media, the epicenter of the earthquake was recorded in the Faryab district of Kerman province. However, there was no immediate damage or casualty in the earthquake. Earlier, a magnitude 4.6 earthquake hit the same province in Iran on Wednesday.
Iran's location on the boundary of several major tectonic plates is prone to earthquakes. Due to which the country is often hit by mild to moderate and even strong earthquakes. The deadliest earthquake of magnitude 7.4 struck Iran in 1990.
In that earthquake, more than 40 thousand people were killed and more than 3 lakh were injured in the country. In addition, another five lakh people of the country became homeless in this earthquake. Then in 2003, an earthquake of magnitude 6.6 destroyed the ancient city of Bam in the southeastern part of Iran.
At least 31 thousand people lost their lives in this city. In addition, in 2017, more than 600 people were killed in a strong 7-magnitude earthquake in the western part of the country. More than 9 thousand people were injured in that incident.
