International Desk: If Russia launches a nuclear attack on Ukraine, Paris will not respond to that nuclear attack. French President Emmanuel Macron made these comments in an interview with public broadcaster France 2 on Wednesday. The French president made his stand as tense multi-pronged talks between Russia and the West continue on the issue of nuclear war. However, the French president was immediately criticized for his comments. In the interview, Macron said that his country has a very clear position on nuclear war. The basis of which is the basic interest of the country. That is, France will not engage in a nuclear war until the interests of France are hurt. Macron said these were clearly defined and that France would not be directly affected by a Russian nuclear strike. One day Emmanuel Macron also said in a Twitter message that his country does not want a world war. Macron's statement was strongly criticized by former French President Francois Hollande and Conservative MP Jean-Louis Thiereau. Thierry told Politico that he almost 'fell out of his chair' when he heard Macron speak, saying that there should always be uncertainty over what has always been considered a vital French interest. In Wednesday's interview, Macron also said that France would send more radars and missiles to protect Ukraine from Russian missile attacks, following Russian missile attacks on numerous Ukrainian cities this week. Paris has already supplied Kiev with howitzers, man-portable air defense systems and heavy armored vehicles. The French president, however, admitted that his country had not supplied Ukraine with as many weapons as it needed. He points out that we are obliged to have something to protect ourselves. Macron also urged Putin to end the war and return to the negotiating table to negotiate with Ukraine. Last September, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia would use all means in its stockpile if his country's geographical integrity was threatened. Western countries interpreted Putin's statement as a direct threat of nuclear war. But the US has said it sees no indication that Moscow is preparing to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine. Asked how the US would respond if Russia used nukes, President Joe Biden said this week that it would be "irresponsible" for him to discuss what he would or wouldn't do. Meanwhile, European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said yesterday that if Russia launched a nuclear attack on Ukraine, there would be an immediate and severe response from the West that would wipe out the Russian military. However, he said, this answer will not be with nuclear weapons.
