International Desk: A bus fell from a mountain road into a canyon in the South American country of Peru. At least 25 people were killed and 21 injured. The bus fell off the road into a 650-feet deep canyon while passing through a mountain road in the Andean region of Cajamarca late Sunday night. This casualty occurred. On Tuesday (April 30), news agency AFP reported this information.

Local official Olga Bobadilla told RPP radio that the bus fell about 200 meters (about 650 feet) deep after the accident. Municipal official Jaime Herrera said the bus carrying more than 50 passengers plunged into a river and some of the passengers were washed away. The bus that fell off the road was stuck in some bushes inside the gorge. That's why the vehicle was not washed away by the current of water.

Later, the police and rescue workers rescued the injured and sent them to the local hospital. Celendin Municipality has declared 48 hours of mourning for the accident and loss of life. AFP says bus accidents are common in Peru. Accidents occur frequently, especially at night and on mountain highways.

In addition, high speeds, poor road conditions, lack of road signs, and poor enforcement of traffic rules often cause such accidents on Peruvian roads. Also last January, a passenger coach fell off the road into a 650-foot deep gorge while traveling from the Peruvian city of Huancayo through the Andes Mountains to the city of Huanta. 25 people were killed in that accident as well. Another 35 people were injured.
