International Desk: Polish energy operator Pern has confirmed that a hole has been discovered in one of the two main pipelines supplying oil from Russia to Europe, Druzhba. In a statement on Wednesday, the company said the rupture was detected late on Tuesday by automated systems in one of the two strings of the Druzhba pipeline, about 70 kilometers from the city of Plock in central Poland. This was confirmed by Transneft, the Russian operator of the Druzhba pipeline network. The company said the damaged pipeline was shut down immediately, and the other string is operating normally. The discovery of the hole in the Druzhba pipeline comes amid tensions over the explosion of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea in late September. Russia considers the incident to be the result of widespread sabotage. Pern said the cause of the incident was initially unknown, but its personnel and firefighters were deployed to the site to assess the situation and secure the area. Mateusz Berger, Poland's top official in charge of energy infrastructure, told Reuters there was no reason to suspect the pipeline was the result of sabotage. It may have been due to an accident. It should be noted that the Druzhba Pipeline is one of the largest oil transportation networks in the world, which spans about 4,000 kilometers and supplies oil from Russia to Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Austria and Germany.
