River Protection Commission's draft law revision is in progress: Minister of State for Shipping

News Desk: The work of revising the draft law of the National River Protection Commission is going on, taking into consideration the views of the stakeholders including various ministries and departments.

This information was informed in the development, financial and administrative meeting of the National River Protection Commission, Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC), National Maritime Institute (NMI) and Seamen and Expatriate Workers Welfare Department held at the Secretariat on Tuesday (September 6).

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury presided over the meeting. This information was informed in the press release of the Ministry of Shipping.

It is said that the meeting informed that the National River Protection Commission has started activities to de-pollute the rivers around Dhaka. The target has been set to complete this program before the birthday of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on March 17 next year. The work of revising the draft law of National River Protection Commission-2021 is going on taking into consideration the opinions received from various ministries, departments, offices and organizations.

It is mentioned in the notification that the 'World River Day' will be celebrated on September 25, rallies and discussion meetings will be held in the capital along with district and upazila levels. The National River Protection Commission will organize a seminar in the capital to celebrate the 'World River Day'.

Meetings, gatherings, workshops, publicity activities should be continued to increase public awareness in the field of river protection of the country. To celebrate the day, extensive publicity should be organized in river ports in collaboration with Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA).

The meeting urged for expediting the inter-ministerial meeting to procure six new LNG tankers/carriers for BSC. The establishment of the National Maritime Institute (NMI) branch in Kurigram and the construction of Seamen's Hostel Complex Bhavan of the Seamen's and Expatriate Workers' Welfare Department in Chittagong have been asked to be completed quickly.

Laila Jasmin, additional secretary of the ministry, senior officials, full-time member of the National River Protection Commission Kamrun Nahar Ahmed and BSC managing director Commodore SM Moniruzzaman, Director General of the Directorate of Shipping Commodore Md. Nizamul Haque, Director of NMI Captain Ataur Rahman, Director of Seamen and Expatriate Workers Welfare Department Suman Barua were present in the meeting.
