Role of media is important in creating awareness about child rights: Speaker

Correspondent : Speaker of Bangladesh National Parliament. Shireen Sharmin Chowdhury MP said that the media's analytical report on underprivileged children helps policy makers to take effective steps to ensure children's rights. He said that the role of media in creating awareness about child rights is important. 

He spoke as the chief guest at the 'UNICEF Meena Media Awards' event organized by UNICEF at the Grand Ballroom of Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka on April 22 (Monday). 

UNICEF Representative in Bangladesh Sheldon Yate delivered the welcome speech at the 18th Meena Media Awards. Educationist Md Zafar Iqbal, Daily Star editor Mahfuz Anam, UNICEF National Goodwill Ambassador Vidya Sinha Meem, Bangladesh Television Director General Jahangir Alam and Pathshala Institute lecturer and filmmaker Shamim Akhtar spoke as special guests. 

Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury MP said, Meen cartoon creates social awareness on various child rights issues including child education, gender equality, prevention of child marriage. He said that UNICEF is working to create awareness about children's rights and the purpose of Meena Media Awards is to create awareness about children's rights in various media. 

He said, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman loved children very much. Bangabandhu guaranteed the rights of children in the constitution. He said that Bangabandhu had implemented the Child Rights Act in 1974 long before the United Nations Charter on Child Rights. 

Speaker said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is working to protect the rights of children. Financial incentives are being provided so that children can go to school without engaging in child labour. He said, the needs of children should be highlighted in front of everyone. 

Awards were given to selected journalists in 12 categories at the event. Meanwhile, the speaker distributed the prizes among the winners.  

Judges and nominee journalists of print and online journalism, video journalism and photojournalism, senior officials of UNICEF, children of Shishu Suraksha Community Hub, invited guests, dignitaries and other media personnel were present in the event.
