Nine Soldiers Killed, 19 Swept Away in the Caspian Sea

Nine soldiers have died after being swept into the Caspian Sea during a military training exercise in Kazakhstan. Several others remain missing.

The accident occurred on Thursday (September 24) during a combat training mission in the western Mangystau Region, which borders the Caspian Sea.

Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Defense said that, according to preliminary information, a total of 19 military personnel were swept into the sea during the accident. The deaths of nine soldiers have so far been confirmed.

Citing the ministry, Qatar-based news outlet Al Jazeera reported that three soldiers have been rescued alive so far. Search and rescue operations are continuing to locate the remaining personnel.

In a statement, Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Defense said the accident occurred after weather conditions suddenly deteriorated. However, it did not provide further details on how the soldiers were swept into the sea or the exact circumstances of the incident.

The ministry said search and rescue operations for the missing soldiers are still underway.
