News Desk: The sudden avalanche and devastating floods that occurred along the Nepal-Tibet border are not merely a local accident; they are a severe disaster affecting the entire environmental system.

For eight countries, including Bangladesh, that depend directly and indirectly on the Himalayan mountain range for their survival, this incident is a major warning. Scientists have warned that as Himalayan ice continues to melt rapidly due to global warming, this dangerous situation is becoming increasingly complex day by day.

When an avalanche or mountain runoff begins at the peaks of the mountains, river water rushes toward the plains within moments. As Bangladesh is located at the downstream end of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna basins, the impact of any upstream surge directly reaches Bangladesh. Due to these changes in climate, concerns have emerged that the risks of flash floods, river erosion, and untimely mountain runoff may increase many times in the coming days.

Experts strongly emphasize that it is no longer possible to deal with disasters while sitting within the boundaries of individual countries. The eight countries in the region, including Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Bhutan, China and Pakistan, now need to come under one umbrella. There is no alternative to a joint system for exchanging advance information on mountain weather and monitoring the flow patterns of rivers. If early disaster warnings can be delivered at the right time, the lives and property of thousands of people can be saved.
