Four Leaders Appointed to BNP Standing Committee

Four leaders have been newly included as members of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) National Standing Committee, the party’s highest policymaking body.

The information was disclosed in a press release issued by the party on Saturday (August 15).

According to the release, the four leaders were appointed to the National Standing Committee as part of efforts to strengthen the party’s organisational activities and maintain continuity in its decision-making process.

The four new members are Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed, Md Amanullah Aman, Dr Farhad Hossain Donar and Md Ismail Jabiullah.

Ruhul Kabir Rizvi had been serving as the BNP’s senior joint secretary general. He previously served as the party’s joint secretary general. A former vice-president of Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSU), Rizvi later served as president of the Jatiyatabadi Swechhasebak Dal after completing his student politics.

Amanullah Aman had been serving as an adviser to the BNP chairman. He rose to prominence during the 1990 anti-autocracy movement and was elected vice-president of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU). He later served as the BNP’s student affairs secretary and joint secretary general.

Dr Farhad Hossain Donar was also serving as an adviser to the BNP chairman. He has played an important role in organising professionals. He is the chairman of Bangladesh Medical Studies and Research Institute (BMSRI), one of the country’s prominent medical research and educational institutions. Dr Donar is also the chief adviser to the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) and executive director of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation. He previously served as convener of BNP Dhaka North City unit.

Ismail Jabiullah had been serving as an adviser to the BNP chairman. He is currently serving as the government’s adviser for public administration.

The BNP said it expects the newly inducted leaders to provide thoughtful advice through their expertise, experience and prudence. They are also expected to play an effective role in making important decisions in the interests of the party and the people at the highest policymaking forum.

The party said the decision was taken as part of efforts to further strengthen its organisational activities and increase the involvement of experienced leaders at the policymaking level.

Meanwhile, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir recently resigned from his post and the party’s Standing Committee after being nominated as the BNP’s presidential candidate. Another seat became vacant following the death of former Speaker Barrister Zamir Uddin Ahmed.

In addition, Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia has been unable to attend Standing Committee meetings regularly due to illness, while Mahbubur Rahman has remained inactive in politics. Against this backdrop, the BNP has inducted four new members into its Standing Committee.
