Argentina Reach Round of 16, Overshadowing Cape Verde's Heroic Display

Defending champions Argentina booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a dramatic 3-2 extra-time victory over Cape Verde, ending one of the tournament's most inspiring underdog stories.

The Round of 32 clash was packed with twists and drama. Lionel Messi gave Argentina the lead in the first half, but Cape Verde fought back to equalize. Argentina regained the advantage early in extra time through Lisandro Martínez, only for Cape Verde to level the score once again with a spectacular strike.

With the match seemingly heading toward penalties, Argentina finally found the winner in the 111th minute, when a corner led to an unfortunate own goal by Cape Verde defender Diney Borges, sealing a hard-fought victory for the reigning champions.

Although Argentina progressed to the last 16, Cape Verde earned widespread admiration for their fearless performance. Playing in their first-ever World Cup, they twice came from behind against one of football's biggest powers and pushed the holders to the brink of elimination. Their spirited display has been widely praised as one of the standout stories of the tournament.

Argentina will now face Egypt in the Round of 16.
