Sports Desk: Regular captain Mitchell Santner is absent, and experienced players like Glenn Phillips and Devon Conway are not in the squad. Still, New Zealand’s stand-in captain Tom Latham remains optimistic. He wants to make the most of this white-ball series as a learning opportunity.
The ODI series against Bangladesh national cricket team begins on Friday (April 16) morning. Despite fielding a relatively inexperienced side, Latham believes his team is in a strong position. He also feels the series will provide valuable exposure to younger players.
Latham said they have arrived with a somewhat inexperienced squad, but this creates opportunities for players who haven’t had many chances before. Playing in Bangladesh and in subcontinental conditions offers a great learning platform. He emphasized that gaining experience here will help players grow and strengthen the overall depth of New Zealand cricket.
He added that their primary goal is to win the series. At the same time, each match presents a chance to learn and improve so that they can perform better as the series progresses. According to him, sharing knowledge about local conditions within the team will be key, and adapting to situations will be crucial for success.
Before the 2023 ODI World Cup, New Zealand national cricket team toured Bangladesh for a three-match ODI series, winning it 2–0. This time, the first two matches will be held in Mirpur, while the final match will take place in Chattogram.
