‎Harvard Broadens My Ability in Teaching and Research

Dr. Mohammad Tarikul Islam:  A Journey Shaped by the World’s Leading Universities. My perspectives on teaching and research have been shaped by several globally renowned institutions—Jahangirnagar University, the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, SOAS, Harvard University, and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University—where I studied or served in prestigious capacities. Early in my academic life, I realized that hard work alone is not enough; it must be complemented by purposeful learning, clarity of goals, and meaningful mentorship. Jahangirnagar University, where I now teach as a professor, strengthened me with that foundation.
‎Since early 2024, Harvard has added a remarkable new dimension to my academic journey. By sharing these experiences, I hope to inspire aspiring scholars from the Global South to pursue excellence in teaching and research at the world’s top universities.

‎Harvard: A Transformative Experience
‎
‎Reflecting on my time at Harvard—as a Visiting Scholar in 2024 and later as a Visiting Scientist in 2025—I remember not only the academic activities but, more importantly, the people who shaped these experiences. Harvard offers its visiting faculty and scholars access to unparalleled academic resources, including world-class libraries, research facilities, lectures, seminars, and workshops. But above all, it offers a thriving intellectual community.
‎As a Visiting Scholar, I found myself engaging deeply with departmental life—interacting with faculty, collaborating with peers, and broadening my networks. As a Visiting Scientist, I was able to contribute knowledge while learning from cutting-edge research across disciplines.

‎People Who Make Harvard Special
‎
‎My time at the Weatherhead Center, the Kennedy School of Government, and the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative offered some of the most memorable moments of my academic journey. While Harvard’s academic rigor is exemplary, what truly enriches the experience is the people. The diversity, openness, curiosity, and drive of the students and faculty make Harvard a uniquely inspiring community.

‎I was fortunate to meet mentors, colleagues, and friends who not only encouraged my work but also challenged my assumptions in meaningful ways. Their passion pushed me to grow both intellectually and personally.

‎Academic Enrichment and Professional Growth
‎
‎Harvard’s faculty members—pioneers in their respective fields—were always eager to share ideas, discuss research, and guide emerging scholars. I participated in numerous seminars as a speaker and discussant, gaining insights that continue to enrich my teaching and research at Jahangirnagar University.
‎
‎I was fascinated to discover that Harvard often has more research opportunities than undergraduate researchers available. This reflects its commitment to nurturing intellectual exploration at every level.

‎Beyond Classrooms: Experiencing Boston
‎
‎Outside academic life, Harvard also gave me opportunities to explore Boston. From the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library to the MIT campus, every visit offered new learning and inspiration. My residence in Boston became a gateway to countless memorable interactions with colleagues and students.
‎
‎Some of my most meaningful reflections emerged not in seminar halls, but during quiet walks across Harvard Yard or along the Charles River—reminding me that learning often happens beyond structured spaces.
‎
‎Advice for Aspiring Scholars
‎
‎My writing for the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative blog and my experience as a visiting scholar, scientist, and professor have strengthened my academic identity. I wholeheartedly encourage aspiring scholars—especially from the Global South—to pursue opportunities at top universities such as Harvard, Oxford, and Cambridge.

‎My advice is simple:

‎Stay curious and keep learning.
‎
‎Consult current students and department offices.
‎
‎Plan deliberately and pursue your dreams with integrity and passion.
‎
‎Balance your academic goals with personal well-being.
