Ishwarganj Correspondent: Around fifty illegal establishments, including various shops, illegally built on government land, have been demolished in the Uchakhila Bazar intersection area of Ishwarganj Upazila, Mymensingh. 54 acres of land in the old cattle market of Uchakhila Union of the upazila was illegally occupied for about 40-50 years. The 54 acres of land was marked and determined last Friday.
The drive was conducted by Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Iqbal Hossain from 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday. During the drive, about fifty illegal structures, including various shops, illegally built on 30 percent of government land on the banks of the Kachamati River at the Uchakhila intersection, were evicted. Ishwarganj Police Station and Army teams assisted in the eviction drive.
It is alleged that influential circles, using political and local influence, have occupied the government land of 762 dags in Uchakhila Bazar and built more than fifty permanent and temporary establishments. For ages, they have been collecting monthly rent of 3-15 thousand taka from those establishments by taking a deposit of 50 thousand to 5 lakh taka per shop. Many occupants have built houses on that government land and have also bought and sold them. Although the Ishwarganj Land Office has repeatedly ordered them to remove their establishments after measuring and marking the land, the occupants have not heeded. Later, the eviction drive was carried out by the upazila administration on Sunday (March 16, 2025).
Kanchan Mondal, a furniture shopkeeper at the evicted site, said, "I rented the shop from Malek Sarkar. I heard that the place belongs to the government. I have been severely affected by the vandalism ahead of Eid."
Russell Mia, the owner of the house in the evicted area, said, "My uncle Afaz Uddin and I have owned this land for about forty years by purchase. We purchased the land from Jainak Bashir Uddin. We also have BRS in our name. But without taking these into account, the eviction drive was carried out in our place without giving any notice."
Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Iqbal Hossain said, "We are evicting several shops and illegal establishments in the area adjacent to the river bank of Uchakhila Bazar. This drive will continue later and stricter measures will be taken, including increasing the amount of jail fines, so that no more illegal shops can be set up in these places."
