‎US Special Envoy Sergio Gor Calls on PM Tarique Rahman ‎

Diplomatic Correspondent: Visiting US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon on Saturday.

‎The meeting began at 9:30 am, according to Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Jahidul Islam Rony.
‎During the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on Bangladesh–US bilateral relations, the expansion of trade and investment, regional cooperation and other issues of mutual interest. The Rohingya crisis and potential areas of economic cooperation between the two countries were also discussed.

‎Prime Minister Tarique Rahman called for continued US investment in Bangladesh, particularly in the information technology, agricultural and supply-chain sectors. The two sides also discussed investment opportunities through the US International Development Finance Corporation.
‎Foreign Affairs Minister Khalilur Rahman, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir, and PM’s advisers Rehan Asif Asad and Mahdi Amin were present at the meeting.

‎Bangladesh Ambassador to the United States Tareq Md Ariful Islam and US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen also attended.

‎Gor arrived in Dhaka on Thursday afternoon for a three-day official visit. He met Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman later that evening and visited the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar on Friday.
‎
‎During his visit to the camps, Gor praised Bangladesh for sheltering the forcibly displaced Rohingyas and continuing to provide humanitarian assistance. He stressed the need for a swift, sustainable and political solution to the crisis.
