7.8-magnitude earthquake in Turkey, hundreds killed

International Desk:  A strong earthquake of magnitude 7.8 has hit the southeastern part of Turkey, adjacent to Syria. So far 17 people have died in the earthquake. Many houses were destroyed.

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred near the Turkish city of Gaziantep at 4:17 a.m. on Monday. Its depth was 17.9 km. So far 17 deaths have been reported.

According to the report of the British media BBC, the tremors were also felt in the capital Ankara and other cities. Many people rushed out of their homes to avoid loss of life. Although no casualty has been reported so far, several buildings in Bhumicamp have collapsed. Many people are stuck in it. A shopping mall in the city of Diyarbakir has collapsed.

The governor of Osmania province has reported that five people were killed in the collapse of the building. He said, 34 buildings have collapsed. Five people lost their lives in the city of Sanliurfa. 16 buildings were damaged there.

The duration of the earthquake was about 45 seconds. Aftershocks were reported shortly after. Tremors were also felt in Syria, Cyprus and Lebanon.

Turkey is located in one of the most active earthquake zones in the world. In 1999, more than 17,000 people were killed after a powerful earthquake struck the northwest of the country.
