International Desk: Every day in 2021, at least 15 farmers and 15 agricultural laborers committed suicide in India. Seven percent of the total number of suicides in the country are farmers. This figure has reached the highest number since 2017. After a recent survey by CNN-News 8, such terrible information came to light. According to the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) under the Ministry of Home Affairs, 6.6 percent of the accidental deaths and suicides reported in the country in 2021 were related to agriculture. The report says that a total of 10,881 people who are related to agriculture have committed suicide in 2021. Among them 5318 are farmers and 5563 are agricultural labourers. Among them there are 211 women. The total number of suicides in the country was 1 lakh, 64 thousand, 33 people. The study says that of the 5318 farmers who committed suicide in 2021, 4806 of them owned their own land. 512 people were cultivating on leased land or on someone else's land. As a result, it goes without saying that the farmers who have their own land are in more danger. If you calculate from 2017 to 2021, this number is about 53 thousand. So many people related to agriculture have committed suicide in these four years. This number is highest in 2021. Most of last year's high number of suicides occurred in Maharashtra. There were more than 4,000 agricultural suicides, of which 2,640 were farmers who farmed their own land. After Maharashtra comes the name of Karnak, from where the statistics of 2169 suicides have been collected. It is followed by Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. 80 percent of agricultural suicides in the entire country are from these few states. Maharashtra's picture is dismal this year too. Two days ago, it was learned that at least 9 farmers have died abnormally in Maharashtra's Vidarbha in three days. According to the sources, the crops were damaged due to heavy rains last month. And because of that, the farmers sank into depression and despair. Since 2000, the Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti has repeatedly brought up the issue of farmers' suicides. They claim that 12 farmers have committed suicide this month as well. Since January this year, this number has reached 512. Crops were severely damaged due to heavy rains since July. Even after this, the farmers allegedly did not get additional seeds for compensation. Meanwhile, banks and creditors did not leave them. On the other hand, the agricultural states of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chandigarh have zero suicides, says NCRB data.
