News Desk: The price of onion, a common ingredient in many local dishes, has skyrocketed again.

Local varieties of onion were selling at Tk 70-80 per kilogram (kg) on Thursday, which was Tk 55-60 per kg a week earlier.

The price of imported onion soared to Tk 60-65 per kg from Tk 45-50 per kg a week earlier.

The stock of local onion has almost run out and the supply of imported onion has also declined due to adverse weather conditions, said traders.

Shyambazar Krishipanya Arot Malik Samitee’s Organising Secretary Haji Abdul Majed said the supply of local onion is almost finished while the price of imported onion has also increased.

He said the wholesale price of Indian Nasik onion was 42-43 per kg, Indore Tk 37-36 per kg and Myanmar onion was selling at 46-47 per kg on Thursday. The prices of these onion varieties have increased by Tk 10-12, Tk 8-10 and Tk 10-11 per kg respectively, said the businessman.

Other retail traders at Mohammadpur Krishi Market said the price of onion will not reduce until the harvest of murikata onion.

Director of DAE Field Service Wing AKM Monirul Alam told the Daily Sun that farmers cultivated plenty of onion this season.

He said the demand for onion in Bangladesh is 35 lakh tonnes against the production of 33 lakh tonnes while a huge amount of onion is also exported.

But, the harvesting of early onion variety is being delayed due to rainfalls over the past few months
