At least 15 people have been killed in flash floods triggered by torrential rains in China's northern province of Shanxi. Three people are still missing. Hundreds of thousands of people have been affected by the floods in the country's top coal-producing region.

The state-run Global Times reported on Tuesday that at least 1.78 million people had been affected by the floods and about 120,000 had been displaced. 19,500 houses have collapsed due to the floods.

However, it is not clear which area of Shanjhi has suffered the most. Shanxi is located in the western part of the capital Beijing and covers an area of 156,000 square kilometers (60,000 square miles).

The floods caused at least 60 million in damage to the area. Last July, a record-breaking flood in the country's central Henan province killed more than 300 people. Within a few months, the flood situation in Shanjhi is getting worse.

Authorities have been forced to shut down at least 60 coal mines in Shanxi due to the floods. The Chinese Meteorological Administration told local media that rescue efforts were being hampered by heavy and prolonged rains and storms. Authorities told the Xinhua news agency that 120,000 people had been immediately evacuated and rehabilitated.

According to the provincial meteorological bureau, an average of 119.5 mm (4.6 inches) of rain fell between October 2 and October 6. Due to the floods, about 1 lakh 90 thousand hectares (4 lakh 60 thousand acres) of land crops have been destroyed.
