International Desk: Fifteen migrants have died in the Mediterranean while trying to cross into Europe illegally from Libya. Another 16 migrants were rescued alive in the incident. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) says two Coast Guard boats have rescued survivors as well as dead migrants returning to Libya.

This information was given by the news agency Reuters in a report on Tuesday (October 12). The deaths are thought to have been caused by a boat carrying migrants damaged while crossing the Mediterranean illegally. However, the company did not say anything about it.

Recently, migrants from Libya, Tunisia and other areas have been flocking to various parts of Europe, including Italy. Immigrants try to cross the Mediterranean dangerously in small boats to reach Europe illegally.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) says the number of migrants and refugees drowning in the first six months of this year has almost doubled compared to last year while trying to cross dangerous seas to Europe. The company said in a new report in mid-July.

The IOM said at least 1,146 people had died between January and June this year. The number of people trying to cross the Mediterranean to Europe has increased by 56 percent.

Reuters says the Libyan coastguard prevented more than 23,000 migrants and refugees from crossing the border illegally in September. However, immigrants and refugees are not safe in Libya.

According to the news agency, migrants arriving in Libya from all over the world to migrate to Europe in the hope of a better life are being tortured, imprisoned and killed in this North African country. Libya has detained more than 5,000 refugees and migrants in anti-immigration operations over the past week.

Also on Friday, security forces shot dead at least six immigrants inside a prison. They were killed because of the chaos caused by the overflowing crowd in the prison. Many migrants were able to flee at the time, according to the International Organization for Migration.
