News Desk: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will address the high-level general discussion of the 7th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) today. The speech will focus on Rohingya, climate change and post-Covid-19 economic recovery. Other priorities in his speech included sustainable development, food security and the elimination of inequality.

The Prime Minister participated in the first day of the UNGA General Debate on September 21. The session is scheduled to end on September 28.

Following in the footsteps of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Sheikh Hasina will deliver her speech in Bengali as in previous years. This will be his 16th speech in Bengali. Bangabandhu gave his first Bengali speech at the United Nations in 1974.

Sheikh Hasina arrived in New York via Helsinki to attend the UNGA session directly. He could not attend the 65th session physically due to the Covid-19 epidemic situation.

The 7th session started on September 14. On that day, Abdullah Shahid of Maldives was sworn in as the President of the General Assembly and he inaugurated the current session.

Due to the global epidemic, the number of delegates to the General Assembly has been limited, and delegates from UN member states are encouraged to make earlier statements instead of appearing directly at UN headquarters.

Hundreds of heads of state and government are expected to take part in the UNGA session, the main policy-making body of the United Nations.
