Ensuring safe and nutritious food is one of the priorities of the government: Food Minister

News Desk: Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder has said that ensuring safe and nutritious food for all is one of the priorities of the present government.

He was speaking as the chief guest at a media briefing on Bangladesh's participation in the UN Food System Summit-2021 organized by the Food Ministry at the Information Building Auditorium in the capital on Sunday (September 19).

The Minister said, ‘The National Pathway Document has been prepared keeping in view the food plan of Bangladesh in the next one decade. This pathway document will be the driving force behind building a hunger-free country by achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and implementing the Eighth Five-Year Plan.

According to the Ministry of Food, the UN Secretary General has convened the Food Systems Summit on September 23 in collaboration with Rome-based organizations to determine the various levels of food system transformation to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will present the Pathway Document of Bangladesh at the Food Systems Summit.

Noting that the role of the media in creating public awareness on many important issues in the country is universally acknowledged, the Minister said, "The media can also play an important role in making the people aware about nutritious and safe food." At the same time, the right message about the Pathway document can reach the people. '

"If we can't create awareness among the people, we will lag behind in achieving our goals," he said. If we want to build a sustainable and prosperous Bangladesh, we have to create public awareness. In this case, the media workers can play a leading role.

"Once upon a time after 1975, people had to make a living by eating rice," he said. The people of that Bangladesh do not go without food now. We have improved in everything from food production. This time we have to look at nutrition security. '

Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in a special guest speech. Maqbool Hossain said, "The right to food is a fundamental constitutional right of every citizen. The state will ensure adequate food for the citizens. Keeping the food supply chain in place and delivering nutritious food to them is quite challenging. '

Food Secretary Moshammat Nazmanara Khanum presided over the function while Robert D. Simpson, Bangladesh Representative of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and Rudaba Khandaker, Country Director of Gain spoke. The five objectives of the National Pathway Document were discussed in detail in the workshop. The event was attended by senior officials of the Ministry of Food, representatives of development partners and representatives of print and electronic media.
