International Desk: Violence has erupted in two South African provinces over the imprisonment of former President Jacob Zuma. Zuma supporters are looting shops, blocking roads.

The violence began last week in Jacob Zuma's home province of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng province. It later spread to Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa. Police said on Sunday that at least 72 people had been arrested in connection with the incident.

South African police Major General Mathapel Peters said hundreds of people looted and set fire to shops in Alexandra and Bramley, near Johannesburg. The body of a 40-year-old man was recovered from such a shop.

He said three police officers were injured during the arrest of the looters and one was admitted to the hospital.

Roads connecting the Johannesburg N3 and the coastal city of Durban on the coastal KwaZulu-Natal were blocked for several hours, the AFP news agency reported. Protesters blocked the streets of the jail where Jacob Zuma is being held.

On Sunday, Cyril Ramaphosa, the country's president, called on the public to remain calm and pay attention to the corona's compliance. At the same time, he urged all to refrain from activities that destroy life and economy and to carry out peaceful activities. However, looting continues in various parts of Durban despite the President's call.

According to the police, the capacity of the police is being increased in both the states where violence has spread. Action will also be taken against those who are inciting violence through social media.

Former President Jacob Zuma has been serving a 15-month sentence since last week. The court sentenced him for not cooperating with the corruption investigators. After he refused to surrender, the country's constitutional court set a time limit of midnight for his arrest on Wednesday. A statement from the Zuma Foundation later said the former president had decided to surrender.

Zuma had earlier said, ‘I am ready to go to jail. But, to be sent to jail at the time of the epidemic at this age means to carry out my death sentence. ' He is the victim of a political conspiracy. After 69 dramas, the 69-year-old leader surrendered.
