EC Issues Gazette Redefining Boundaries of 11 Parliamentary Constituencies, Including Mirza Fakhrul’s Seat

News Desk: The Election Commission (EC) has published a new gazette redefining the boundaries of 11 parliamentary constituencies across Bangladesh by incorporating newly created upazilas and union parishads. EC officials said the changes are administrative only and will not alter the constituencies in practice.

The gazette was issued on Sunday (August 30).

Constituencies included in the gazette

The 11 constituencies are:

• Thakurgaon-1

• Bogura-2

• Pirojpur-1

• Mymensingh-10

• Brahmanbaria-3

• Brahmanbaria-4

• Cumilla-3

• Lakshmipur-2

• Lakshmipur-3

• Chattogram-2

• Cox’s Bazar-1

Changes in Mirza Fakhrul’s former constituency

According to the EC gazette, Thakurgaon-1 is the parliamentary seat vacated by newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. The constituency, previously consisting of Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila, has now been updated to include the newly formed Ruhia and Bhulli upazilas.

These two upazilas were created by dividing Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila and were approved by the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganization (NICAR) in May.

Other constituency updates

• Bogura-2: Newly created Mokamtala Upazila has been added alongside Shibganj Upazila.

• Mymensingh-10: South Gafargaon Upazila has been added to Gafargaon Upazila.

• Brahmanbaria-3: The newly created Barishal Union Parishad under Akhaura Upazila has been included.

• Brahmanbaria-4: The constituency has been adjusted following the creation of Barishal Union.

• Cumilla-3: Newly formed Bangra Upazila has been added to Muradnagar Upazila.

• Chattogram-2: Fatikchhari North Upazila has been included alongside Fatikchhari Upazila.

• Cox’s Bazar-1: The newly created Matarmuhuri Upazila has been incorporated.

Why the gazette was issued

EC officials said the gazette simply updates constituency descriptions to reflect Bangladesh’s latest administrative reorganization. While the names of new upazilas and union parishads have been added to the official boundaries, the actual geographic coverage and representation of these constituencies remain unchanged.
