Indian Syndicate Entering Bangladesh with Arms and Drugs: 1 Arrested in BGB Operation

News Desk: Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has arrested an Indian national along with a foreign firearm, ammunition, and Yaba tablets in Barlekha Upazila of Moulvibazar.

He was arrested on Thursday night from the Kumarshail border area of the upazila.

The arrestee, Balai Namasudra (35), is a resident of Govindapur village under Latu Police Station in Karimganj district of Assam, India.

Separate cases have been filed against him at the police station over the incident. On Friday afternoon, he was sent to prison through the court.

According to the BGB, based on information that an Indian smuggling syndicate was entering Bangladesh through the Kumarshail border area in Barlekha Upazila with drugs and illegal arms on Thursday (August 27) night, a special patrol team from the Beanibazar Battalion launched an operation.

Sensing the presence of the BGB, the smugglers opened fire on the BGB members. In self-defense, BGB personnel returned fire, causing the smugglers to try to flee the scene. At one point, BGB members gave chase and managed to detain an injured Indian smuggler.

Following his detention, a foreign pistol, two rounds of .22 caliber ammunition, and 500 Yaba tablets were recovered from him.

Lieutenant Colonel Md. Ataur Rahman Sujon, Commanding Officer of the Beanibazar Battalion (52 BGB), stated that the detainee is involved with a border smuggling syndicate. The recovered weapon and drugs were brought in for distribution within Bangladesh. The detainee was handed over to Barlekha Police Station, and the BGB has filed a case over the incident. Efforts are ongoing by the BGB to identify and arrest the remaining absconding individuals.

Barlekha Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Moniruzzaman Khan said on Friday afternoon that the BGB handed over an Indian national detained with 500 Yaba tablets, two rounds of lead bullets, and a pistol-like weapon. The BGB filed a case regarding this incident, and the accused was sent to jail via court on Friday afternoon.
