Allegations of Irregularities and Corruption: Melandaha Union Parishad Chairman Removed from Office

Jamalpur Correspondent: The acting panel chairman of a Union Parishad in Melandaha, Jamalpur, has been removed from his post and replaced with an administrator following multiple allegations of irregularities and corruption.

On Sunday (7 December), under the directive of the District Commissioner, a notification signed by Jamalpur’s Deputy Director of Local Government, Mousumi Khanom, announced the removal of Aminul Haque, Chairman of Ghosherpara Union Parishad. The responsibility for administering the Union Parishad has been assigned to Md. Abdur Rouf, the Upazila Agriculture Officer.

Earlier, local UP members and residents had accused the panel chairman of engaging in various irregularities during his eight months in office. Among the allegations were the sale of VGF rice allocated for Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Azha, refusal to approve development projects without bribes, and withholding honorarium payments for UP members for over a year. UP members Zainal Abedin Lebu, Muslim Uddin, and Forhad Hossain—along with locals including Fazlul Haque, Abdul Gafur, Anwar Hossain, Masud Rana, Jewel Rana, Nureza Begum, and Shahanaj Begum—submitted written complaints and staged a human chain demanding his removal.

The removed panel chairman was also accused of manipulating information on government VGD assistance cards by secretly adding his wife, Swapna Khatun, as a beneficiary. He allegedly concealed his identity on the card by listing himself as her father instead of her husband.

After the issue gained significant media attention, the administration took action.

Following his appointment as administrator, Upazila Agriculture Officer Md. Abdur Rouf received support from UP members Zainal Abedin Lebu and Muslim Uddin, who said, “This step was timely and necessary. We want all activities of the Parishad to be transparent. Through the administrator, the Union will operate smoothly, and genuine vulnerable residents will receive their rightful benefits.”

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Jinnatul Ara stated, “An administrator has been appointed following the allegations against the UP chairman. This measure aims to keep the Union Parishad functional and ensure public service delivery.”
