News Desk: As in previous years, expatriate Bangladeshis are sending more money ahead of the holy Eid-ul-Adha. As a result, a strong surge in remittance inflow has been observed throughout the month.

According to the latest data from Bangladesh Bank, in the first 20 days of the current month of May, remittances totaling **$2.62 billion** have arrived in the country through legal banking channels. In local currency, this amounts to approximately **Tk 32,185 crore** (calculated at Tk 122.75 per US dollar). This means that on average, more than **Tk 1,609 crore** in remittances has been arriving daily this month.

This information was confirmed on Thursday (May 21) in the afternoon by Bangladesh Bank spokesperson Arif Hossain Khan.

Officials of Bangladesh Bank say that the government’s strict stance against hundi (illegal money transfer), incentives for sending remittances through legal channels, and improvements in banking services have played a key role in increasing remittance inflows. They also believe that remittance inflow may increase further during the remaining days of May due to Eid-ul-Adha.

Analyzing the overall scenario of the current fiscal year (from July 1 to May 20), it is seen that a total of **$31.955 billion** in remittances has arrived in the country so far. During the same period of the previous fiscal year, the amount was **$26.434 billion**. That means remittance inflow has increased by **20.50%** this year compared to the same period last year.
