Chinese vessel detained in Japan’s economic zone

News Desk: A Chinese fishing vessel has been detained in Japan’s exclusive economic zone, and its captain arrested, escalating tensions between Japan and China. The vessel was seized after ignoring orders to allow inspection off the coast of Nagasaki and attempting to flee, according to Japanese authorities. This information was reported by the British news outlet BBC.
The ship had 11 crew members on board, including the 47-year-old Chinese captain who was arrested. Japanese authorities and media have identified the vessel as a high-capacity fishing ship named Tiger Net.
Japan’s Fisheries Agency stated that the vessel was detained and the captain arrested on Thursday for disobeying inspection orders and attempting to escape. A fisheries inspector had instructed the ship to stop, but it ignored the order and tried to flee, prompting the detention. This is the first incident since 2022 in which Japan has detained a Chinese fishing vessel. China has not yet issued an official response to the incident.
On Friday, Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara stated that strict measures against illegal fishing by foreign vessels will continue.
The incident comes at a time when Japan-China relations are already highly strained. In November, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi had warned that if China attempted to seize Taiwan by force, Japan could intervene militarily, provoking a strong reaction from China.
This political tension has also affected economic ties. A decline in Chinese tourists has hurt Japan’s tourism and retail sectors, lowering stock prices. Diplomatic friction has worsened, with China repeatedly urging Takaichi to retract her comments by the end of 2025 and warning Japan “not to play with fire.”
Meanwhile, Japanese artists visiting China have had several events canceled, the release of popular Japanese films delayed, and last month, two pandas loaned to Japan were returned to China.
