Ukraine agrees to proposed 30-day ceasefire

International Desk:  Saudi state media reported that Kiev has agreed to Washington's proposed 30-day Russia-Ukraine ceasefire after talks with the United States in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Saudi media outlet Al-Akbariya said in a statement on its X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday night that "Saudi diplomatic efforts have resulted in the success of the US-Ukrainian talks in Jeddah."

The Turkish news agency Anadolu reported this in a report on Wednesday.

It said, "After 9 hours of US-Ukrainian talks, Ukraine has agreed to a temporary ceasefire for 30 days. This could be extended and there are also plans for a prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine."

Although the parties involved have not yet officially commented on the talks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday that Kiev views the US ceasefire proposal as "positive".

Earlier that day, US and Ukrainian delegations began meetings in the Saudi city of Jeddah to discuss a possible Moscow-Kiev peace agreement.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiha were present at the talks. Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan was also present at the time.

Earlier on Monday, Zelensky said in a Telegram message that Ukraine has been working for peace since the start of the war. However, he blamed Russia for the protracted war.

Russia launched a military operation against Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Moscow had offered to hold peace talks if Ukraine abandoned its desire to join the Western military alliance NATO, but Kiev saw this as an interference in its sovereignty.
